UnRaid covered my primary goal of using mismatched drives, uses a standardized file storage that can be read from another system in case of catastrophic failure, has the added benefit that JBOD plus parity allows individual disks to be spun up instead of the whole array, much richer feature set with third party apps/plugins, and infinite customization due to running on generic PC hardware. Ended up selling mine to someone in exactly the situation I was worried about in that their Drobo failed and they needed another Drobo to get the data off those disks.
